I'm in the mood to breed...  having bred catfish, tetra's, killifish and cichlids I was looking for something new...my eyes fell on these little hyperactive guys

Rainbowfish...  my first and I chose the Pseudomugil furcatus

Family:
Pseudomugilidae

Category:
Rainbowfish

Distribution:
Indo Pacific; Originally discovered in the streams of Papua New Guinea

Main Ecosystem:
Stream; Found in small freshwater jungle streams that are fast flowing,

Temperament:
Peaceful; Best kept with other small community fish such as tetras, danios, barbs. Males can be occasionally aggressive towards females if kept in pairs, but being kept in groups with more females helps limit aggression.

Diet:
Omnivore; Omnivore

Care:
Feed with flakes as staple diet, and with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms. Easy to keep as long as frequent water changes are given.

PH:
6-8

Temp:
24C - 27C (75F - 81F)

Potential Size:
Male: 6cm (2.6")
Female: 6cm (2.6")

Water Region:
Middle Surface; Middle-Surface

They are now happily swimming in their own 70 Liter (19 gallon) tank and I am conditioning them with live white mosquito larvae & live Artemia.  So if all goes well I should have little ones soon.

How did the breeding go?
I have good water conditions and I have 1male 2 females (one male died, the 2 others have scoliosis so I suspect they have TB)

I put in a spawning mop in my 20G community tank and I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the best!

Was it easy? Did you succeed?

They are the easiest fish I have ever bred with...I have photo's of the babies somewhere here on the blog ;) They spawn daily and each female lays around 10 eggs per day... They are crazy about the Java Moss. Put the Moss in the tank and after 2-3 days I remove the moss and put it into another tank...4-5 days later there are babies ... it's as easy as that. Everytime I move plants from the big tank in to one of my shrimp tanks etc. I have babies. I last gave some pruned plants to a friend and he now has 18 furcatus babies ;)

Good luck with breeding but it should be a breeze xx

Wow thanks. I hope that's the case, I put a pink spawning mop in there (that's the darkest color yarn I had :S)

I'm hoping that'll work, I have only one male left as the other died so I'm hoping hoping! Tomorrow will be my second day with them and I only have one healthy female too, the other 2 have bent spine from birth defects of vitamin deficiency, something I did not notice when purchasing >.<)

Are the eggs visible? if so, what color are they how big? etc?

Could I remove the eggs carefully and put them in my tiny aquababies tank (it's like 4" cube) until they hatch? my 5G is used as a GT now...

Thanks
